You've surely heard of Cannes, Sundance, SXSW, Berlin, Venice, and other film festivals. Surely you've thought "what would it be like to see the best films before everyone else?" Most film festivals cost enormous amounts of money, involve lots of stars, and are extravagant events. Seeing as how I don't have enormous amounts of money, I don't know any stars, and I don't believe I've ever been called extravagant, I am forced to improvise.
Armed with a Netflix account, lots of free time, and a passion for film, I decided to curate my own One Man Film Festivals (OMFV). Like most things in this hyper-connected world, you can join me on my journey. Below is a rough guide to the various film festivals I have planned for the next few weeks. Assuming anyone stumbles upon this, feel free to offer suggestions for both themes and films within themes.
Proposed Schedule:
November 4 Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave with a focus on Truffaut and Godard)
November 11 Berlin Alexanderplatz/Fassbinder
November 18 Mystery Science Theater 3000
November 25 Bergman and Antonioni
December 2 Fellini and Italian film
December 9 The New Talkies (or, as they're also known, Mumblecore)
I'll try to list the films a week in advance and will review each film I watch.
